How the quantities are calculated
Pavers = patio area ÷ one paver's footprint (including the joint), rounded up with your waste allowance. Sub-base and bedding sand = patio area × layer depth × bulk density (about 1.6 t/m³), shown as tonnes. Edge restraint = the patio perimeter. Treat every figure as a planning estimate.
Paver patio FAQ
- How deep should the sub-base be?
- For a path or patio it's commonly 100–150 mm (4–6 in) of compacted crushed stone, and more for driveways. Always follow local guidance and your supplier.
- How much bedding sand do I need?
- A 25–40 mm (1–1.5 in) screeded layer of sharp sand is typical. The calculator turns your chosen depth into a tonnage estimate.
- Why buy extra pavers?
- Edge cuts and the odd breakage make a 5–10% allowance wise, plus a few spares for future repairs.
