How gravel weight is calculated
Volume is the area multiplied by the depth. Weight is that volume multiplied by the material's bulk density - which is why the stone type matters: pea gravel, crushed stone, and sand each weigh a different amount per cubic yard. A 2–3 inch (5–8 cm) layer suits most paths and beds; driveways need 4 inches (10 cm) or more. Weights are approximate bulk-density estimates; suppliers vary.
