How Far Can a 2x8 Deck Joist Span?

The short answer

A No. 2 Southern Pine 2×8 deck joist can span up to 13 ft 1 in (3.99 m) at 12 inches on-center, 11 ft 10 in (3.61 m) at 16 inches, and 9 ft 8 in (2.95 m) at 24 inches under the standard 40 psf residential deck load. In the SPF / Douglas Fir-Larch / Hem-Fir group, the same 2×8 reaches 11 ft 8 in, 10 ft 7 in, and 8 ft 8 in - so for the most common build, 16 inches on-center, the practical answer is 11’-10” with Southern Pine and 10’-7” with the other common softwoods.

There is no single “a 2×8 spans X feet” number. The allowable span depends on two things you choose: the lumber species and the on-center spacing. Same board, three spacings, three different answers.

Where these numbers come from

These are the prescriptive maximums from the American Wood Council’s DCA6 deck-construction guide (the same table mirrored in IRC R507.5), for No. 2 grade lumber under a 40 psf live load plus 10 psf dead load - the standard residential deck assumption. Two things worth knowing about how the table works:

  • Span is measured face-to-face of the supports (from the ledger face to the beam face), not the overall depth of the deck.
  • The deflection limit is already built in. You don’t add a bounce check on top; the table value is the final answer for standard loads.

This is a table lookup, not a structural calculation - which is exactly what makes it DIY-friendly. You don’t engineer the joist; you read the row the code already engineered for you.

The second column uses the SPF value for the whole group - the most conservative of the three species. Douglas Fir-Larch and Hem-Fir actually span slightly farther; if you need those extra inches, look up their exact rows in DCA6. Planning to the SPF number is always safe.

Worked example: a 12-foot-deep deck

Say your deck sticks out 12 ft from the house - ledger on the wall, beam at the outer edge, Southern Pine 2×8 joists at 16 inches on-center.

  • Planned span: 12 ft × 12 = 144 in
  • Table maximum at 16 in on-center: 11’-10” = 142 in
  • 144 in > 142 in - the 2×8 fails by 2 inches.

Three legal ways to fix it, straight from the same table:

  1. Tighten the spacing to 12 in on-center. The max jumps to 13’-1” (157 in), and 144 ≤ 157 - passes with 13 inches to spare.
  2. Step up to a 2×10 at 16 in. A Southern Pine 2×10 spans 14’-0” (168 in) - passes.
  3. Move the beam in a foot. The joists then span 11 ft (132 in ≤ 142 in - passes) and cantilever the last foot past the beam. The IRC allows a deck joist to overhang up to one-fourth of its back span (R507.5), and 12 in is well under 132 ÷ 4 = 33 in.

Rule of thumb from the table: each size up buys roughly 2 to 3 more feet of span, and for a 2×8, tightening the spacing from 16 to 12 inches buys about 1 more foot, because each joist carries a narrower strip of deck.

Watch-outs

  • The 40 psf assumption is for normal residential use. A hot tub, heavy planters, or a big snow load are concentrated or heavier loads the table doesn’t cover - those need a stronger design than the prescriptive row.
  • Grade matters. The table is for No. 2 lumber. Boards graded below No. 2 (No. 3, stud, or utility grade) span less; don’t apply these numbers to them.
  • Measure the span, not the deck. Face of ledger to face of beam. A 12-ft-deep deck with a 1-ft overhang is an 11-ft span.
  • Composite decking often wants tighter joist spacing (many brands require 16 in or even 12 in on-center for angled boards) - check the decking manufacturer’s spec as well as the joist table.
  • A deck is a load-bearing structure. These are the code’s own published numbers, and building to them is exactly how a by-the-book DIY deck is done - but confirm your locally adopted code and pull the permit; local amendments can differ.
