How the tile count is calculated
Each tile covers its own size plus one grout joint, so the area a single tile covers is (tile width + grout gap) × (tile height + grout gap). The number of tiles is the room area divided by this covered area, rounded up, then multiplied by a waste factor for cuts and breakage. Diagonal and herringbone layouts need more waste - about 15–20% - because more tiles are cut along the edges.

- How much extra should I buy for waste?
- For a straight grid, add about 10%. For diagonal or herringbone layouts, add 15–20%, because more tiles are cut at the edges and angles.
- Does the grout joint change how many tiles I need?
- Yes, slightly. A wider grout gap means each tile covers a little more floor, so you need marginally fewer tiles. This calculator includes the joint width in every estimate.
