How to use this carpet calculator
- Enter each room's width and length in feet; add a row per room.
- Set a waste allowance - 10% is typical for cuts and seams.
- Read the carpet you need in square yards and square feet - it updates live.
How much carpet you need
Carpet is priced and sold by the square yard, and one square yard is 9 square feet. The calculator adds up each room's area (width × length), sums them, then divides by 9 to convert to square yards. Measure wall-to-wall, not baseboard-to-baseboard, and split odd or L-shaped rooms into rectangles, adding each as its own room. A 10% waste allowance is included by default to cover trimming, seams and matching the pile direction - bump it up for stairs or lots of doorways.
Frequently asked questions
- How much carpet do I need?
- Measure each room's width and length in feet, multiply for the area, and add the rooms together. A 12 × 12 ft room is 144 ft²; with 10% waste that's about 160 ft², or roughly 18 square yards. Enter your rooms above and the calculator does it in both units.
- How many square feet are in a square yard of carpet?
- Nine. A square yard is a 3 ft by 3 ft square, so it equals 9 square feet. Carpet is usually sold by the square yard, so the calculator shows both - divide square feet by 9 to get square yards.
- How much extra carpet should I buy for waste?
- Add about 10% for a simple rectangular room, and 15% or more if there are lots of doorways, closets, stairs or a bold pattern to match. Carpet comes on 12-foot-wide rolls, so some trim loss is unavoidable - the waste allowance above builds it in.
