Why small bathrooms cost more per square foot
A toilet, vanity, shower valve and the plumbing behind them cost about the same whether the room is 40 or 90 ft². The biggest way to save
Keep the existing layout. Leaving the toilet, tub and sink in place avoids re-routing supply and drain lines - often the single largest line item - and can save thousands versus a full reconfiguration. Put the budget into the tile and fixtures you see every day, not into moving pipes you never will.
Watch-outs before you budget
- Get three local quotes. Labor is 40–60% of the cost and varies widely by region; a national average is a starting point, not a bid.
- Set aside a 10–20% contingency. Old bathrooms hide water damage, rot and out-of-code wiring behind the walls.
- Confirm what needs a permit. Moving plumbing or adding circuits usually does; a like-for-like swap often doesn’t.
