Room perimeter with a highlighted baseboard run - baseboard calculator

How to use this baseboard calculator

  1. Enter the room's length and width in feet.
  2. Add up the widths of doorways and openings (no trim runs there) and set your stick length.
  3. Read the linear feet and the number of sticks - a waste allowance for cuts is included.

How the trim amount is calculated

Trim runs around the room's perimeter - 2 × (length + width) - minus the widths of doorways and other openings where no baseboard runs. The calculator adds your waste allowance for miter cuts and mistakes, then divides by one stick's length and rounds up to whole sticks. Add more waste for lots of corners or an intricate profile.

Frequently asked questions

How much baseboard do I need?
Measure the room's perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width), subtract the doorway widths, then add about 10% for miter cuts. A 12 × 10 ft room with one 3 ft door needs roughly 41 linear feet plus waste - about six 8 ft sticks. Enter your room above.
Do I subtract doorways from baseboard?
Yes - baseboard doesn't run across a doorway or a cased opening, so subtract those widths from the perimeter. Don't subtract windows, though; baseboard runs under them along the floor.
How much extra trim should I buy for waste?
About 10% for a straight run, and more for rooms with many inside/outside corners or a tall, intricate profile, since each miter wastes a little length. Always buy at least one full spare stick from the same profile.
