How Many Drywall Screws Per Sheet?

The short answer

Plan on about 32 screws per 4x8 sheet of drywall - one screw per square foot of board. Wall installs land between 28 screws (16 in framing at code-minimum spacing) and 36 screws (12 in spacing everywhere), so 32 is the safe ordering number, and it’s what the Drywall Calculator uses.

The count isn’t a guess - it falls straight out of the code spacing rules below.

The screw spacing the code actually requires

For screws with no adhesive, the US IRC (Table R702.3.5) and the Gypsum Association’s GA-216 spec set these maximums. Framing spacing is measured “on center” (o.c.): the distance from the middle of one stud to the middle of the next.

Two things trip people up:

  • Ceilings are always 12 in, no matter the joist spacing. Gravity is working against the board.
  • Many pros ignore the 16 in wall allowance and just run 12 in everywhere. It’s simpler to keep straight and it never fails inspection.

What that means per sheet

A 4x8 sheet (1.2 x 2.4 m) on 16 in o.c. framing crosses 7 studs hung horizontally, or 4 studs hung vertically. Multiply studs by screws per stud and you get the whole range:

The easy rule of thumb across all of these: one screw per square foot of board. A 4x8 sheet is 32 sq ft, so 32 screws.

Worked example: a 12x12 room

Say the room is 12 x 12 ft with 8 ft walls (3.7 x 3.7 m, 2.4 m ceiling), and you’re boarding the ceiling too:

  1. Wall area: 2 x (12 + 12) x 8 = 384 sq ft
  2. Ceiling: 12 x 12 = 144 sq ft → total 528 sq ft (49 m²)
  3. Add 10% waste: 528 x 1.1 = 580.8 sq ft
  4. Divide by 32 sq ft per 4x8 sheet: 580.8 ÷ 32 = 18.15 → round up to 19 sheets
  5. Screws: 19 x 32 = 608 screws

While you’re at it: the same room needs about 16 gal of joint compound (~0.03 gal per sq ft) and 528 ft of tape (~1 ft per sq ft of board).

Which screws to buy

  • 1/2 in drywall on wood studs: 1-1/4 in (32 mm) coarse-thread drywall screws.
  • 5/8 in drywall on wood studs: 1-5/8 in (41 mm) coarse-thread.
  • The rule behind those lengths: GA-216 requires the screw to bite at least 5/8 in (16 mm) into wood framing.
  • On steel studs, switch to fine-thread screws of the same lengths.

Watch-outs

  • Set the head just below the surface without breaking the paper. A dimple you can mud over is right; a torn face means the screw holds nothing. A drill with a drywall (dimpler) bit makes this automatic.
  • Keep screws at least 3/8 in (10 mm) from panel edges and ends (GA-216). Closer than that and the edge crumbles.
  • A screw that misses the stud must come out. Left in place, it will pop through the finish later.
  • Adhesive changes the spacing rules. If you glue the field, the code allows wider fastener spacing - check IRC Table R702.3.5 before you thin out the pattern.
  • Local code wins. These are the model-code numbers; your inspector’s word is final.
