How Much Does It Cost to Pour a 10x10 Concrete Slab Yourself?

The short answer

Pouring a 10×10 ft (3×3 m) concrete slab yourself costs about $450–$800 in materials - the worked example below lands at $654. Hiring the same 4-inch slab out runs $500–$1,000 installed at the national-average $5–$10 per ft² (HomeGuide / Concrete Network 2026), and small jobs usually quote near the top of that range, so doing it yourself typically keeps $150–$350 of the quote in your pocket.

The spread comes down to one choice: bagged concrete mix (about $350–$400 in bags plus a mixer rental) or a ready-mix short load (about $300–$500 delivered). Everything else - gravel, forms, mesh - costs the same either way.

Bags or a short load?

Bags look cheaper until you lift them. 56 bags of 80 lb (36 kg) mix is 4,480 lb of material - over two tons to load, haul (that’s about three half-ton-pickup trips), and feed through a mixer one batch at a time. A 100 ft² pour also has to be placed, screeded and floated before the first batches stiffen, and hand-mixing 56 bags fast enough is a race most first-timers lose.

The truck fixes that, for a fee. At the 2026 base rate of $120–$180 per cubic yard, 1.5 yd³ is only $180–$270 of concrete. But plants charge short-load fees when the truck leaves mostly empty, so a small delivery typically lands at $300–$500 total (HomeGuide 2026). You get uniformly mixed, correctly wet concrete arriving all at once - which is exactly what a slab wants.

Rule of thumb: up to roughly 25 bags (a footing, a small pad, fence posts), bags win. At a cubic yard or more, price the short load first. For a 10×10 slab, the truck is usually worth every dollar of the fee.

Worked example, start to finish

  1. Volume: 10 × 10 × 0.33 ft = 33.3 ft³ ÷ 27 = 1.23 yd³.
  2. Bags: 33.3 ÷ 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag = 55.6, so 56 bags - buy 60 for spillage. 60 × $6.24 = $375. (In 60 lb bags at 0.45 ft³ each, it’s 75 bags.)
  3. Gravel: a matching 4 in base is another 1.23 yd³ ≈ 1.8 tons of crushed stone, picked up at a local materials yard (delivery for a load this small usually costs extra). Call it $60.
  4. Forms: the perimeter is 40 lin ft, so four 2×4×10s plus stakes and screws ≈ $40.
  5. Mesh: 100 ft² ÷ 24.5 ft² per remesh sheet = 4.1, so 5 sheets with overlap = $84.
  6. Mixer and extras: $60 for a one-day mixer rental, $35 for expansion joint and cure & seal.

Total: 375 + 60 + 40 + 84 + 60 + 35 = $654 in materials and rentals.

The same slab hired out runs $5–$10 per square foot installed, and small jobs usually quote near the top of that range: a 100 ft² pour carries the same truck, crew and setup as one twice its size, so minimum job charges push most 10×10 quotes to $800–$1,000.

What you actually save

At national-average rates, a plain 100 ft² slab runs $500–$1,000 installed ($5–$10/ft²), and 50–60% of that is labor - roughly $250–$600. That labor buys one long, hard day for a two-person crew: dig, compact, form, pour, screed, float and broom.

Note that your DIY shopping list will top a contractor’s materials share (about $200–$500 of the installed price). You pay retail for bags or a short-load fee, and you rent tools a crew already owns. The savings are real, but they come from replacing the labor, not from buying concrete cheaper than a pro does - net it out against a typical $800–$1,000 quote and a 10×10 pour keeps about $150–$350 at home.

Watch-outs

  • Concrete waits for no one. Ready-mix specs assume the truck is emptied within 90 minutes of batching (ASTM C94), and a warm day shortens the workable window further. Line up a helper, stage every tool, and cut the screed board before the truck arrives.
  • Compact the base. Spread the gravel in 2-inch lifts and compact each one (a plate compactor rents for about the price of the mixer). A slab poured on soft fill cracks no matter how good the finish is.
  • Call 811 before you dig. The free US utility-locate service marks buried lines. Digging blind into a gas or power line turns a $654 project into a very bad week.
  • Wet concrete burns skin. It is strongly alkaline. Wear gloves, boots and eye protection, and rinse off splashes right away.
  • Cure it, don’t just leave it. Keep the slab damp for the first week (cure compound or a hose). Concrete you can walk on in a day or two doesn’t reach its rated strength for 28 days, so keep vehicles off for at least a week.
